Yesterday I wrote about the fact that up to a third of people aged over 55 did not know when they were going to be able to retire.
Today it has been reported that nearly a quarter of those claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance are aged 50 or over.
Starting your own business (I can tell you from experience) is one of the most exciting career moves. It is interesting that many over age 50 are going through this experience.
Hopefully this is not because of any form of ageism in the employment space (although I suspect sadly this maybe happening) because all the evidence is that ‘mature’ workers have an awful lot to contribute.
It could be that starting in business after age 50 is part of a response mechanism to the real challenges about building a robust enough pension fund.
I hope though that these ‘silver starters’ enjoy real success both financially and in terms of the satisfaction that they get from being their own bosses.
