Do you remember the football chant from opposition fans of Arsenal FC? “Boring, boring Arsenal!”
Apparently the same can now be said of retirement.
A survey carried out by Skipton Building Society claims that over half of the recently retired are bored with it after just ten months!
That’s very sad when you think that retirement should be such an exciting point in a person’s life opening up the opportunity to go an do different things, perhaps things that the individual never had the time to do when they were employed.
It could be a function of money.
If the retiree has too little of it they may not be able to afford to live the retirement life they may have dreamed of.
Or it might be that actually they didn’t plan ahead. I have hear retirement described as “the longest holiday of your lifetime” and yet it appears for many it is hardly a holiday at all.
And then perhaps there is the realisation that trying to turn an interest or hobby into something more full-time in its nature has the opposite effect of what is expected.
I enjoy coarse fishing, but honestly I am not sure I could do that 7 hours per day for seven days per week all year!! Even I would get bored with that.
So perhaps there is another side to work to consider.
If you are fit and healthy and not over stressed by it perhaps it is worth while carrying on working if you are able to do so. But having the option is surely the best position to be in?
