You might think that a strange question or even have an immediate and direct reply such as “having enough of it!”
But consider the view that money is important because of what it does rather than what it is.
I asked a client this question a recently and his immediate response was that money was important to him because it “enabled him and his wife to pay the bills and enjoy themselves”. Fair answer.
It might also sound a little flippant that I asked him why is paying the bills and being able to enjoy themselves important to them. The answer surely was self evident?
He did me the courtesy of replying that paying the bills meant they could “sleep at night without worrying” and that being able to enjoy themselves was important because they didn’t have to “worry about having to scrape by”.
So actually money was important to them because it removed worry.
I am sure that is something that we can all relate to; after all aren’t money worries one of the biggest stress factors in many people’s lives?
I was also reminded of a statement I heard (I would love to be able to tell you where it comes from but I am afraid I don’t know) that “true wealth is about how little you need rather than how much you have”.
So perhaps the question is a little more complex than it seems on the surface.
What is important about money to you?
