The FTSE 100 index of leading UK company shares finished the week at 5,989.76, up 44.05 points or +0.74% on the day and up 292.04 points (+5.13%) over the week.
Strong performance from the banking sector supported comfortable returns in the FTSE 100 on Friday, with a late rally from mining stocks adding to returns for investors. This followed earlier reports of a manufacturing slowdown in China which had depressed metals prices.
Over a year the FTSE 100 has risen from 4,805.80 (up 1,183.96 points or 24.64%).

The UK Bank Rate is 0.5% and CPI inflation was 4.5% for the year to May 2011.
