We are very proud to be supporting the inaugural Cranleigh Parish Boundary Challenge, which takes place on Sunday 17th May 2015.
Cranleigh Rotary Club, together with various local organisations including Informed Choice, have planned an ambitious challenge to walk, run or jog around the 23 mile Cranleigh Parish Boundary.
The course has been divided into six stages, allowing walkers and runners to tackle the whole distance or create a relay team. The course is entirely on public footpaths and the final maps will be published shortly.
The Rotary Club are organising the event to provide an opportunity for supporters of various local and national charities to take part and raise funds for their own chosen charity.
Jigsaw School is assisting with the planning for the Challenge and we encourage people taking part to consider supporting Jigsaw.
Every participant will receive a bespoke medal, which is being sponsored by Informed Choice.
Walking the Parish Boundary is also known as beating the bounds. It is an ancient custom still observed today in many English parishes.
According to tradition, a group of old and young members of the community would walk the boundaries of the parish, usually led by the parish priest and church officials, to share the knowledge of where they lay, and to pray for protection and blessings for the lands.
For the Cranleigh Parish Boundary Challenge, Reverend Roy Woodhams will be blessing the “beating the bounds” at the start. Anne Milton MP has agreed to start the Challenge.
Whilst the original purpose of this ceremony has become obsolete with modern surveying techniques, beating the bounds remains a good way of strengthening the community and giving it a sense of place.
