Apparently the new Governor of the Bank of England enjoys a housing allowance of some £5,000 per week.
That by anybody’s standards is rather a lot of money.
Well perhaps it isn’t; after all we hear of professional footballers who earn a multiple of that figure each week, with some of them earning into the hundreds of thousands each week.
But whatever way you look at it for the vast majority of the British public five grand per week to rent a house is still a particularly large sum.
So if you had £5k per week to spend what would you do with it?
This is fantasy money of course and unless you are lucky enough to win the lottery is simply never going to happen. It is after all a staggering £260,000 per year.
The new Governor is a Canadian citizen and according to the Times his wife has tweeted that the chances are they are going to return to Canada in five years time.
So over that time frame, assuming his contract says that figure is a weekly allowance for the whole five years, he will have costs us a cool £1.3m in rent.
I don’t know what the rest of his package consists of but I only hope he turns out to be worth that money.
In an age of austerity where according to our Prime Minister we are all in is together, I can only conclude that some of us are more in it than others!!
Still it is fun to think about my question. If you had £5,000 per week, what would you do with it?
