The FTSE 100 index of leading UK company shares finished the week at 6,510.44, closing down 28.01 (-0.43%) on the day and down 153.3 points or 2.30% over the week.
Continued turmoil in emerging markets dragged the FTSE 100 to finish January at a six week low, posting its worst monthly performance since June.
This means the FTSE 100 experienced its worst start to the year since January 2010.
Over a year the FTSE 100 has risen from 6,276.90, a rise of 233.54 points or 3.72%.
