The FTSE 100 index of leading UK company shares finished the week at 6,838.06, closing up 25.07 (+0.37%) on the day and up 174.44 points or 2.62% over the week.
The index recorded its biggest weekly gain in seven months, with bid speculation around market heavyweight Vodafone leading the market higher.
BofA Merrill Lynch and UBS both believe Vodafone represents a potential bid target once it has sold its stake in US mobile phone company Verizon Wireless.
Over a year the FTSE 100 has risen from 6,286.60, a rise of 551.46 points or 8.77%.

The UK Bank Rate is 0.5% and CPI inflation was 1.9% for the year to January 2014.
