The FTSE 100 index of leading UK company shares finished the week at 5,828.67, down 16.62 points or -0.28% on the day and down 163.08 points (-2.72%) over the week.
The index closed down on Friday despite a late rally, as sentiment following the Japanese earthquake and tsunami weighed heavily on the minds of investors.
Insurers suffered losses as the cost of the damage in Japan was forecast in the hundreds of billions of dollars.
Over a year the FTSE 100 has risen from 5,617.30 (up 211.37 points or 3.76%).

Brent Crude Oil Future is currently priced at $113.47/barrel. Gold is $1,411.50/ounce and Silver is $34.10/ounce.
The UK Bank Rate is 0.5% and CPI inflation was 4.0% for the year to January 2011.
