In the second of a series of blogs as we start to celebrate our 20th birthday at Informed Choice, we find out what Andy was doing 20 years ago, back in 1994.
20 years ago I was 38, mother to two teenagers and starting a new business venture with hubby Nick which was slightly terrifying but enormously exciting, (same applies today really, but now have 5 grandchildren).
1994 was the year we extended our tiny kitchen to double it’s size and at the same time we had the garage rebuilt; this made such as difference to the entire house.
20 years on we have just submitted plans to gain permission to change the garage space into a living room, and if granted (fingers crossed), will give us a much needed ‘family’ room, so that when we have visitors we don’t all have to be in different parts of the house!!
Our holiday in 1994 was taken in Devon, where we went to the same place every year.
Self catering with two swimming pools, a lake for fishing, tennis courts and a beautiful setting in a secluded valley with only six cottages on the farm, so something for everyone.
It was the year before in 1993 when we made the mistake of breaking with tradition to go to the Norfolk Broads on a boat, nightmare, but that’s another story!
My spare time in 1994 was used much the same as today, painting, decorating, making stuff, gardening, walking & spending time with the family.
To remember what else was going on 20 years ago, Internet searches gave me some useful prompts, because to be honest I can’t actually recall the detail!!!
Most memorable event in the news that year was the gruesome events which had taken place at 25 Cromwell Street in Gloucester. The faces of Fred & Rosemary West will never leave my memory, pure evil.
Nick and I had lived in the city for 4 years and Emma was born there.
The music, movies & TV in 1994 were pretty iconic.
The ‘battle of the bands’ between Blur with their album Parklife and Oasis with Definitely Maybe was defining. Wet Wet Wet released Love is all Around which featured in Four Weddings & a Funeral, one of my top films of 1994.
The best of the rest in my order of preference were Pulp Fiction, The Shawshank Redemption and Forrest Gump, all so different but equally brilliant and still watchable 20 years on.
TV in 1994 saw the beginning of ‘Friends’, loved it, still do! Other USA imports were ER, The X Files and My So Called Life, all great TV.
